A Christian-hating, Atheist man dressed in black tactical-style gear and armed with an assault rifle opened fire inside a small South Texas church on Sunday, killing 26 people in an attack that claimed tight-knit neighbors and multiple family members.

Texas officials confirmed the suspect as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26. They said he lived in New Braunfels, which is about 35 miles north of the Sutherland Springs church.

As he left the church, the shooter was confronted by an armed resident who ‘‘grabbed his rifle and engaged that suspect,’’ said Freeman Martin, a regional director of the Texas Department of Safety, reportsThe Boston Globe.

But as he left the church, Stephen Willeford risked his life to stop him.

‘A local resident grabbed his rifle and engaged the suspect,’ Martin said. ‘The suspect dropped his rifle, which was a Ruger semi-automatic rifle, and fled from the church. A local citizen pursued the subject at that time.’

Willeford, who has no military experience, didn’t hesitate when came face to face with Kelley, and shot him in between Kelley’s body armor, hitting him in his side.

The 26-year-old had dropped his Ruger semi-automatic rifle and climbed in an SUV to flee the scene.

Another local resident, Johnnie Langendorff, had stopped at the gas station across the street to get breakfast when he noticed the gun fight at the church.

He says he saw Kelley leave the church as he was being pursued by Willeford.

The shooter raced off in his SUV. The resident with the rifle — a neighbor unidentified as of Sunday night — came to Johnnie Langendorff, who happened to be driving by. The two men were strangers. ‘‘He briefed me quickly on what had just happened and said he had to get him,’’ Langendorff said later. ‘‘So that’s what I did.’’

Blasted with adrenaline, Langerdorff wove his truck at high-speed through traffic while trying to catch the fleeing car, the neighbor riding with him.

A short time later, the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a ditch at the county line. Police arrived, and Kelley was found dead in his vehicle.
