TOTAL IMMIGRATION TO U.S. TIES ALL TIME RECORD
The U.S. tied its all-time record for new immigration — both legal and illegal — in 2016, with 1.75 million arrivals, according to a new study Wednesday.
The Center for Immigration Studies, which is releasing the report, says the increase is part of a post-Great Recession rebound that’s quickly changing the demographics of the U.S.
The surge was driven chiefly by Latin America, which saw its numbers double from about 335,000 in 2011 to 668,000 in 2016, pushing it past Asia as the top-sending region.
“The dramatic increase in new immigrants settling in the United States in recent years is primarily driven by the nation’s generous legal immigration system, both long-term temporary visa holders (e.g. guest workers and foreign students) and new permanent residents (green cards),” wrote Steven A. Camarota, research director at the center.
Mr. Camarota used data from the American Community Survey to calculate the numbers. The 2016 data is the most recent available.
The 1.75 million tied with 1999 — just before the tech-bubble recession — as the highest year of all time. It was up from 1.62 million in 2015, and just 1.08 million in 2011, the trough of the Great Recession dearth.
DEMOCRATS FURIOUS BROWN PEOPLE WON’T BECOME MAJORITY SOONER BECAUSE OF TRUMP
The plan, released by the White House last month, would scale back a program that allows people residing in the United States to sponsor family members living abroad for green cards, and would eliminate the “diversity visa program” that benefits immigrants in countries with historically low levels of migration to the United States. Together, the changes would disproportionately affect immigrants from Latin America and Africa.
“By greatly slashing the number of Hispanic and black African immigrants entering America, this proposal would reshape the future United States. Decades ahead, many fewer of us would be nonwhite or have nonwhite people in our families,” said Michael Clemens, an economist at the Center for Global Development, a think tank that has been critical of the proposal. “Selectively blocking immigrant groups changes who America is. This is the biggest attempt in a century to do that.”

ILLEGAL ALIEN REPEATEDLY RAPED YOUNG GIRL IN NORTH CAROLINA
A man is being held under $3 million bond and an immigration detainer after authorities said he raped a young girl.
Arrest warrants show Mario Sigfredo Lopez Deras, 28, of Raleigh, was charged with statutory rape of a child and indecent liberties with a child.
Warrants show the incidents occurred between April 1 and Sept. 4 and involved a girl under the age of 15.
According to an immigration detainer, Deras is originally from El Salvador and there is evidence he may be in the country illegally.
INVASION CARAVAN MOVES AT SNAIL’S PACE THROUGH MEXICO
Reports about a caravan of barbarians coming to the U.S. from Central America have been featured prominently in the news cycle in past weeks, but the group is still far from the U.S.
The U.S. military is preparing plans to send 5,000 troops to the southwest border in anticipation of the caravan’s arrival, U.S. officials said Monday.
How long could it take for the invading barbarians to reach the U.S.?
The caravan was near the city of Tapanatepec, Mexico on Sunday, according to the Associated Press. That is in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, about 1,000 miles from the U.S. border.
The invading barbarian caravan formed in Honduras about two weeks ago, CNN reported. It is covering about 20 to 30 miles each day, with some on foot and some riding in trucks and other vehicles but at a walking pace.
Estimates as to the size of the caravan are varying widely — it has been reported to be anywhere from 3,600 to 7,000 invading barbarians. However, there are reportedly other caravans forming, including one in El Salvador that plans to depart for the northward journey on Oct. 31.
TRUMP DOUBLES DOWN ON SENDING MILITARY TO STOP INVASION CARAVAN
President Trump on Wednesday continued to focus on the groups of Central American migrants marching to the US border as he attempts to make his hardline immigration stand a major issue in next week’s midterm elections.
The Caravans are made up of some very tough fighters and people. Fought back hard and viciously against Mexico at Northern Border before breaking through. Mexican soldiers hurt, were unable, or unwilling to stop Caravan. Should stop them before they reach our Border, but won’t!

Our military is being mobilized at the Southern Border. Many more troops coming. We will NOT let these Caravans, which are also made up of some very bad thugs and gang members, into the U.S. Our Border is sacred, must come in legally. TURN AROUND!

The president said he will deploy 5,200 members of the military along the border to help the nearly 2,000 National Guard members already there to help bolster security.
Trump has also pledged to detain migrants seeking asylum for prolonged periods in “tent cities” at the border.
