Angela Merkel appears to be ready to cave on tariffs for American car imports.
Richard Grenell, the U.S. ambassador to Germany, has been in talks recently with the chief executives of German car makers BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler, where they pitched the idea of ending car tariffs between the U.S. and the EU.
During these talks, the executives said they would be in favor of scrapping these levies as part of a broader deal encompassing industrial goods, the Wall Street Journal reports.
There is a catch, however. Europe also wants a 25 percent tax on imported pickup trucks, SUVs and big vans scrapped, according to the report. That tax has been in place since the Johnson administration and scrapping it could alienate U.S. auto workers, a key constituency for President Donald Trump.
The report comes shortly after the European Commission said the EU will slap a 25 percent charge on $3.2 billion worth of U.S. goods, including bourbon and motorbikes, as retaliation for levies implemented on European steel and aluminum products by the U.S.
In January 2017, shortly before being inaugurated as president, he said:
“When you walk down Fifth Avenue, everyone has a Mercedes-Benz in front of their house.
“How many Chevrolets do you see in Germany? Not too many, maybe none at all, you do not see anything over there, it’s a one-way street.
“I love free trade, but it must be a smart trade for me to call it fair.”
And at this month’s G7 summit he took aim at the EU, accusing the bloc of using the US as a “piggy-bank”.
He said: “The United States has been taken advantage of for decades and decades and we can’t do that anymore.
“People can’t charge us 270% and we charge them nothing. That doesn’t work anymore.”
Merkel has found herself in an increasingly precarious position as of late, nearly losing her role as the leader of Germany.
The people of Germany have become more and more irate at her lack of leadership and pattern of putting anyone but Germany first in her policies, as polls have shown they are fed up with the barbarian occupation of the fatherland, and thousands of Germans recently protested, demanding the 7th century barbarians be removed from the nation.
It appears that the European Union is on its last legs. When the most pro-EU nation (Germany) begins planning to go contrary to the demands of the plutocrats in Brussels, it’s just a matter of time before George Soros’ dream of a socialist empire spanning the world, beginning in Europe, collapses in upon itself.
Goodbye and good riddance, European Union. It hasn’t been good knowing you.
