When getting a new pet, wouldn’t it be nice to get a few days off to get your new furry friend situated? Residents in Nordic countries can now be on Pawternity leave.
Musti Group, the largest pet supply chain in the Nordics, is offering the possibility of a paid, three-day leave for employees who get a new puppy or kitten.
Pawternity went into effect on June 1 for the company’s 1,500 employees.
When a furry friend first enters a new home, both the pet and owner have new routines to get accustomed to, Musti Group says.
“Depending on the needs of each pet, the first days spent together can be rather intense, and sleepless nights are more than familiar to recent pet parents,” Musti Group says.
The paid Pawternity leave is currently only available in the Nordics.

The well-being of animals is a central part of Musti Group’s agenda. Expertise and interest towards animal welfare are expected from all employees, and an impressive 90% of the company’s 1,500 employees have at least one furry friend at home.

Forming a coherent pack and familiarizing with the new environment require spending some time together.

A baby animal requires constant attention and unconditional love. Paying attention to a pet’s needs and spending time with them supports their learning, builds trust and helps prevent behavioral disorders in the future”, continues Rönnberg.
Pawternity leave will help Musti Group’s employees combine work and free time more seamlessly, contributing to the well-being of their entire family. Henri Mäkinen, the Marketing Director of Musti Group, says employers across different fields should be challenged to consider Pawternity leave in their own communities:
”Puppy socialization and training can’t happen during evenings or weekends alone. A puppy might feel both insecure and lost in their new home, without the presence of their mother and siblings. If a pet is left alone for too long, they will find all sorts of things to do – not all of them necessarily pleasant to the owner”, continues Mäkinen.
